The CDC is investigating a multi state outbreak of human Salmonella infections. According to the most recent reports, 181 people have been infected and 33 have been hospitalized.
The outbreak has affected 40 states, including New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. The outbreak is believed to be linked to contact with live poultry. 86% of the 95 people interviewed after becoming infected reported contact with live poultry.
The CDC recommends taking the following steps if you are a backyard flock owner:
- Always wash hands thoroughly immediately after touching live poultry or anything in the area where birds inhabit, and never let poultry inside of your house.
- Educate yourself and your family about Salmonella infections and how to prevent them: http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/live-poultry-07-15/index.html
