New York lawmakers are contemplating regulating the use of drones throughout the county. Drones, technically known as “unmanned aerial vehicles,” are more or less flying robots.
These “flying robots” are commonly associated with the military, yet have grown increasingly popular in civil applications, such as traffic monitoring, weather monitoring and surveillance.
The new law would prohibit drones anywhere outside of private properties and public parks. The drone owner’s would be permitted to operate drones on their own property, on others property (with the owners permission) or in public parks. Drones would not be permitted anywhere else.
“It’s a safety issue, it’s a privacy issue. It’s a strong law. I’m glad we’re out in front of it,” says Rockland Legislator Jay Hood.
