The International Day of Peace was designated by the United Nations in the early 1980s and serves as a day for all people to commit to peace above differences.
“From education to the arts, social justice to sports, health to the environment, neighborhood issues to service for others, there are many ways to participate in Peace Day!”- http://internationaldayofpeace.org/
At Finkelstein & Partners, our staff is encouraged to use an hour of the workweek as volunteer time. You would be surprised to find what a difference an hour can make. Here are some ideas for how you can get involved and foster peace and unity in the community, inspired by our staff:
Spend time at a local animal shelter. Our staff members volunteer at the Hudson Valley SPCA and Beacon ARF, and this past spring managing Partner, Andrew Finkelstein presented the Animal Protective Foundation with a Hero of the Month award, and also adopted a number of feral cats.
The ASPCA reports approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. The support of volunteers is absolutely crucial in providing care and treatment for animals in need.
Help those struggling to read. According to the Read is Fundamental Organization 34 percent of children entering kindergarten lack the basic language skills needed to learn how to read. 93 million adults in the U.S. read at or below the basic level needed to contribute successfully to society. We are proud to support Literacy Connection’s efforts to provide basic literacy education for adults and literacy support and enrichment for children in Dutchess and Orange County.
Volunteer your time at your local Habit for Humanity or Habitat ReStore. This past spring a Finkelstein & Partners employee was honored in the Habitat of Newburgh’s Volunteer Highlight. The funds raised at the Habitat ReStore go directly towards building houses for those in need.
Donated food. According to Feeding America, in Albany, Rensselaer, and Saratoga Counties approximately 67,000 people are food insecure, 23,000 are babies and children. This spring Managing Partner, Andrew Finkelstein, visited The Food Pantries for the Capital District and provided a contribution to the honorable organization.
