The Veterans Services Group (VSG) represented the veteran for post traumatic stress disorder and colon cancer with bone deterioration. Within months of accepting the veteran’s claim, we were advised by his wife that sadly, the Veteran committed suicide. The Veteran had been waiting for a BVA decision at the time of his death so VSG filed a substitution to allow widow to be substituted in order to pursue the claim. VSG also asserted the widow’s rights to dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC) and pension. VSG submitted a statement in support of claim along with medical treatment records from the veteran’s treating doctor who confirmed that the veteran’s PTSD was a significant contributing factor of his death. The widow was awarded accrued benefits. The Vet was awarded 50% PTSD rating and, as a result, the widow was awarded $51,847.00.
