In June 2023, Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, disclosed to the public and regulators that between March 18 and April 4 of this year, a hacker had gained access to patient information on one of its computer servers.
According to the hospital, the intruder accessed a server containing information about roughly 33,000 patients. That information may have included the patients’ names and addresses, “limited” clinical information about them (such as diagnosis and treatment data), and in “a small number of instances,” their Social Security numbers.
Maimonides sent notices of the breach to the potentially affected patients for whom they had a mailing address.
Breach Victims Face Risks But Have Rights
The individuals whose data the Maimonides Medical Center breach exposed now face potentially severe repercussions.
One possible reason the hacker may have targeted Maimonides is that the information on the server is valuable to identify thieves, who can use it to carry out frauds on banks, credit card companies, and government institutions, or sell it to others who might want it to conduct targeted marketing or intrusive research on individuals.
Victims of identity theft frequently suffer years of severe consequences, including ruined finances and credit scores and harm to their online and offline reputations. Fixing that damage often takes years and tens of thousands of dollars, and exacts a heavy psychological toll.
If Maimonides Medical Center mailed you a notice that the hacking of its server may have compromised your sensitive personal data, or if you believe you are a possible victim of the breach as a current or former patient at Maimonides, you do not have to simply accept and live with the harm they caused you.
Instead, you may have substantial legal rights to enforce against the parties who failed to safeguard your sensitive personal data, including the ability to seek compensation for your current and future losses.
