NYC Man, 46, Drowned in Bear Mountain State Park

46-year-old Refugio Jimenez of Manhattan drowned on Thursday, July 4, at Hessian Lake in Bear Mountain State Park. This is the second drowning at this lake in 2 weeks. On June 24, a 16-year-old boy from Brooklyn drowned in Hessian Lake on a class trip. New York State Police said Jimenez was visiting the park with his family. Jimenez went into the lake on Thursday afternoon and tried to swim across it. At about 5pm, as he attempted the return swim, he slipped under the water. Rescuers were directed by witnesses to the area where he disappeared. Jimenez’s body was recovered just after 6pm. He was pronounced dead at 6:11pm. Jimenez and the 16-year-old boy both went swimming in the lake despite the presence of numerous signs warning that swimming is prohibited. These are two horrible tragedies.
