Statistics show approximately 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60 have experienced some form of elder abuse. Many experts speculate more than 1 in 10 suffer abuse but are unable to report the abuse due to their physical or mental state.
Nursing home residents are often abused and neglected when nursing home facilities understaff, fail to train employees, and fail to abide by local and federal regulations. Even with a staggering number of abused nursing home residents, some law makers are calling for more lenient facility standards and regulations. Those in favor of more lenient regulations claim the burden on facility owners is too great.
Those in opposition fear residents would be negatively affected:
“Advocates for residents have blasted the move. They said the regulations are needed, as the measures will expand care plans, offer greater freedom for residents, increase the amount of training for nurses and aides caring for residents with dementia and provide grievance officers to help handle complaints.
‘This is a very concerted effort to undermine the basic protections for residents of nursing homes,’ said Richard Mollot, the executive director of the Long Term Care Community Coalition, a national nonprofit based in New York City that aims to improve the care of residents in nursing homes.”- Cleveland.com
